Speed Dating Practice Conversation

This lesson plan focuses on conversational practice to encourage English learners to use a wide variety of language functions such as demanding explanations, making complaints, giving warning, etc. The activity used is a variation on the popular practice of speed dating. In this exercise, students speed date each other to practice role plays calling for chunks or phrases used for each situation. This type of approach to teaching is based on the lexical approach or the chunks of language we tend to use to speak about certain situations. Speed Dating Lesson Plan Aim: Practicing a wide variety of language functions Activity: Speed Dating Role Play Level: Intermediate to Advanced Outline: Go through a variety of situations calling for specific language functions asking questions like:What would you do if your boss refused to give you a raise?How do you react when someone gives you a compliment?If someone asks you to a party, but you dont want to go, what do you say?Take time to review various language functions such as contrasting ideas, disagreeing, being vague, etc.Arrange the tables in your classroom so that students can change seats quickly. Assign half of your students to remain seated, the other half should move over one chair for each round.Give students the role-play sheet. Assign seated students role ​A or ​B and moving students the remaining role.Start the first speed dating role play. Let students role play the situation for one minute and then say stop.Ask the moving students to switch to the next partner. It helps if students move in one direction. I remember getting excited when I received a toy doll that came with diapers and accessories to care for when I turned 4. I was the only child at the time but somehow I knew how to care for the inanimate object, maybe from TV shows or from seeing how the women around me cared for their child. The toy section was almost like the equivalent to heaven for kids, walking down the girls’ toy section I was surrounded by toys imitating kitchen objects, there were many versions of baby dolls and the color pink flooded the isle, whether it were pink dresses or the pink vacuum cleaner. On the other side of the isle I saw soccer balls, Lego blocks and toy cars targeted for boys. Growing up, I realized the toy industry that targets the stereotypes of a gender was a sample of the gender roles that are expected to be followed in some cultures; and clearly the representation of a woman is one that does domestic work and has concern over their appearance. My mother was born in a small town of Oaxaca, Mexico and has 7 other siblings, 1 male and 6 female. She went to school with my uncle and aunts in a primary school within the town. She excelled while in school; often getting chosen to go to other nearby schools to compete in academic competitions, something she one day told me she enjoyed. Or we may have small items like jewelry, and cash stored away. Without security measures in place, these items would be directly obtainable to anyone. Not only from those that want to take things from you. Not only from those that would take and use your things against you, like your bank info, your social security number; to name a few. But also those near to you that you love. A Child can enter an unsecured cabinet and get hands on poisonous cleaning supplies, or medications; or even a handgun that may have been meant for protection. It would nearly, if not be the worst to ever happen to lose a child, or other family member, because a locker or desk was unsecured. So it is very important to be ever vigilant in ensuring that your things, especially your wall locker is secured at all times. Start practicing today, and every day. Visitation is not allowed for the first and last three hours of the day, because Moses a twelfth century scholar explained in his Misneh Torah, that medical attention should be given during those hours. The Rabbis of the Talmud (similar to a Catholic Priest) encourage the visiting of the seriously sick, claiming that this eliminates one sixth of the sick persons pain. By not visiting would make the non-visitor a sinner. It is encouraged that a dying person confesses his or her sins if the person is on the verge of dying to cleanse themselves before they part. Judaism law demands that a terminally ill person should be companied twenty four hours a day to prevent the sick to be plagued with thoughts of death and more important, to keep the demons from taking charge of the patients soul when he dies. A candle is also lighted in the room of the terminally ill to scare off evil spirits and to make it known that a human soul is about to leave earth (Watson) After the death of a person the eyes are closed, so the person can finally rest in peace. Some Jews place the body of the deceased on the floor immediately after death. This is done to cool the body to slow the deterioration of the body and also fulfill the biblical prognostication for dust thou art and unto dust shalt thou return(Genesis 3:19). A candle is then lit and placed near the corpse head to show respect to the soul that departed. In the past twenty-six candles were light around the body; twenty-six is the Jewish numerical number meaning God. Today this is done only to show respect to the dead. Jewish people treat a close family members death similar to Americans. Relatives and friends of the deceased feel great distress, sorrow, and pain. Preparing the deceased for burial is one of the highest priorities in Judaism. The corpse most be thoroughly cleansed in order to return to God in a state of purity. Cremation is not allowed in Jewish law. The corpse is dressed simple, inexpensive, white, loose, linen, garments called shrouds: This was done so the dead would be better prepared for resurrection. The coffins most be made out of unpolished pinewood: this shows how Jewish most treat the dead with simplicity and modesty like tradition expects them to. Each member of the family must tear their garment (long white robe) to show their inner pain. At the chapel service people recite the Hashkaba (Rest in peace prayer). The first shovels of dirt or thrown by family members and friends. After the service is concluded the cemetery crew fills the grave. Everyone who attends the funeral must cover his or her heads as a sign of respect. Jewish tradition mandates that mourning for a loved one should be seven days (Shoult 34-64). All mirrors are covered for the seven days of mourning, because it is improper to worry about ones looks during mourning. Any form of entertainment and social activity is forbidden during the mourning week. After mourning week loved ones may make visits to the cemetery (Kolatch 200-234). There are many differences between the Jewish culture and other cultures, but one thing that almost all cultures have in common is that almost all mourn when a death to a loved one occurs. The Jewish culture is one that has extraordinary respect for their dead. Not to many cultures treat incident of death like Judaism.
